As someone who enjoys traveling, I wanted to create an app that I would personally use. While taking the Google UX Design course on Coursera, I had the opportunity to design a mobile app and the prompt that spoke to me was (of course) regarding travel.
Project Timeline: August 19 2025 - September 18 2025
My currency exchange app will let users quickly view live exchange rates, convert between multiple currencies, and find trusted exchange options, which will affect global travelers by allowing them to make informed financial decisions while abroad.
The first goal of this project was to understand the needs of the users, so I dove into creating personas, problem statements and user journey maps.
Meet Kayla, a first time international traveler who wants the app to help her compare exchange rates and understand foreign money better.
Meet Marcus, a frequent business traveler who just needs this currency exchange app to make his life easier so he can save time and money (and business deals)!
Now, onto starting the design. I had to get the ideas on paper and evolve from there.
The first step was to work on the paper wireframes. I explored different ideas for the homepage and highlighted key features that would make it to the next stage.
Then I worked on bringing those paper wireframes to life in Figma with lo-fo digital wireframes. The key elements were based on findings from user journey mapping.
Next, I worked on creating mockup and working on the high fidelity prototype.
The mockups made the app more realistic as elements and images that would actually be seen were added into the design. (P.S. The prototypes can be seen if you scroll down)
Finally, the takeaways and the next steps of this project.
As this is my first project outside of work, it helped me realize how much I really do as a designer and how I can improve my skills with this foundational knowledge.
The next steps are what I'm working on now! Improving the design by going back and testing, exploring improve accessibility and developing app features. Thanks for taking the time to view my work :)
